2018 was a quieter year for us at the bunkhouse, having been closed for the first half of the summer due to family commitments but we started slowly in August were booked through September.
Trying Booking.com (again!) We made the bold decision to try Booking.com for the 2018 season and stared accepting bookings earlier than usual in February for the occasional one night stay. After two months we decided it wasn't for us, largely because we found it complex when doing a booking with pets. Pets have always stayed for free at Greytones Bunkhouse but we have always asked for a small damage deposit per pet. Booking.com had difficulty with this additional deposit and it meant we had to call guests after booking and ask for their payment details again (booking.com keeps this information) and it led to a lot of extra time. Well, nothing lost, nothing gained as they say, I'm glad we gave it a go but I think we're a little bit too unique for them, added to which the 15% cut they take did make it more expensive! We've always kept an open mind and for 2019 we're sticking with Laterooms.com and Tripadvisor for bookings. A quiet summer We were busy through to April but then decided to wind down until August. We had a lot on as a family and were worried we wouldn't have the time to properly run the bunkhouse. I always say, if it can't be done properly there's no point doing it at all, and I know that even though we are a bunkhouse our regulars have got used to our high standard of cleanliness and this is something I would not compromise on. A busy September We started up properly again in August and had a couple of bookings through the new TripAdvisor instant booking system. A much improved system over Booking.com! We found the four bookings that came through all with out any issues and crucially we had all the guests contact details so we could get in touch if need be. Not an important point in itself but if ever there were an emergency and we had to move a guest to the Falcon Manor Hotel (the last time that happened was in 2016 and we always cover the costs). New TripAdvisor bookings led to us being sold out every weekend in September and we had a busier October than in previous years as well! Thank you :) I'd like to thank all the guests that came and stayed with us again in 2018 and I hope to welcome back some converts who came and stayed for the first time last year! It wouldn't be half as fun without any guests! Looking ahead I'll be putting up our looking ahead into 2019 post soon after this one has 'gone live'. Cheers Jan x We hosted a mix of walking groups and couples last year and our favourite review came from Clare who wrote into our website in September, about her experience with a walking group of six who stayed that month. We didn't see any TripAdvisor reviews in 2018 and we think this is because more guests wrote into the website instead.
Clare very kindly wrote: "Thank you for a lovely stay at greystones bunkhouse. It was perfect for our 3 peaks challenge weekend. Such a shame about the weather, but the cottage was dry and warm and just what we needed. Xx" And she also offered some advice for any other guests coming to stay with us at Greystones Bunkhouse: "The village pub looked lovely, but unfortunately was fully booked for evening meals. Advise booking well in advance if you want to enjoy a hot meal locally after a hard day's walking x" Clare would also recommend us - thanks very much! To read all our reviews click here. We also replied to Clare's review: Response: Hi Clare Top Marks! Thank you very much for your kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the bunkhouse and found it a convenient base for your Three Peaks Challenge walk. And of course most importantly it was dry and warm on your return. It's a shame the pub was fully booked and I hope you enjoyed the Knights Table Restaurant over the river. Hope you see you next time your visiting the dales. Thanks Jan xx The Craven Heifer is offering a Full English and buffet breakfast to guests staying with us at Greystones Bunkhouse.

Thank you for a lovely stay at greystones bunkhouse. It was perfect for our 3 peaks challenge weekend. Such a shame about the weather, but the cottage was dry and warm and just what we needed. Xx Tips for other travellers The village pub looked lovely, but unfortunately was fully booked for evening meals. Advise booking well in advance if you want to enjoy a hot meal locally after a hard day's walking x Ratings Location Cleanliness Facilities Service / Staff 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent Would you recommend this property to other travellers? Yes Thanks Clare for your kind words about the bunk house and we hope to welcome you and your walking group back again soon (don't forget theres the promo code 10OFFWEB to save on your next stay!). Jan x New for 2018: faster fibre Wi-Fi in the bunkhouse.
After much anticipation in Stainforth fibre internet has finally reached us and we were first on the list to get the upgrade at the bunkhouse! For our regulars who will be used to the Wi-Fi we're sure they'll find the new service a significant improvement on the current speeds. For guests who are are yet to stay with us for the first time, its probably best not to expect speeds that you might get at home, especially if you live in a town. Seeing as Stainforth is still very rural, the fibre is at least 35 Mbps but speeds may drop if there's a lot of guests connected at the same time and all streaming films and TV. However, its worth noting that compared to the service now it is a much welcome improvement. To book your stay with our new free fibre Wi-Fi click book now: Our popular Summer Mid-week and Winter rates are on sale.
We've added the Summer Mid-week Sale rates for online bookings with the bunkhouse now available from just £89 Sunday to Thursday until the end of September. There is now also the Winter Seasonal Sale rates to the online booking service and you can now book the bunk house for only £88 per night from October onwards. Our low season rates are available as we appreciate that the winter months are less popular and allow travellers on a slightly tighter budget to come and experience the dales. We hear that walking is good in the autumn months as there are no queues at the styles on the Three Peaks route, when compared with popular summer weekends when there can often be a wait. Our local pub the Craven Heifer is also open in the winter months and serving food, but we recommend calling ahead to reserve a table as the kitchen does occasionally close early in the low season. A popular alternative is the Knights Table restaurant in Knights Stainforth which does serve food daily until 9 pm and offers a great value cooked breakfast, options include a Full English. We forgot to add our 2017 award! Ooops!
We started this new website back in March 2018 and in the process of moving across our pictures and such we forgot to add our award from 2017! TripAdvisor awarded us the Certificate of Excellence for last year, which is a awarded to properties with consistently high reviews (we have 25 excellent reviews). Naturally, we were very pleased to have received the TripAdvisor award for our second year, particularly as we are also rated the first choice accommodation in Stainforth on TripAdvisor. If you'd like to stay with us please click below to our secure booking form. A guest has booked for a usually popular weekend in September.
Please note, a guest from Ashton under Lyne has booked Saturday 15 September 2018. Friday 14 is still available. New for 2018 - our first video tour.

The deal is available for any number of nights including peak weekends. With this promo code there is also the benefit of using our Book Now, Pay Later option. You won't need to pay for your booking until your stay when you book online and if plans change you can cancel online with out needing to call us. Good to know:
We've had a few calls in lately about the bunkhouse and in this post we'll answer a few popular queries.
Will I share with other guests? Greystones Bunkhouse has never been available on a 'hostel-style' basis and we don't have any plans to run it like this. This means that if you make a booking online the bunkhouse is yours for your dates that you booked. Even if there's only 1 or 2 of you staying in the bunkhouse it is still exclusively yours and we'll never let another group come and share with you. Does the Wi-Fi work with it being so rural? The Wi-Fi in Stainforth is not super-fast but it works for most services. If there's six of you booked in and you all want to stream Netflix or YouTube in HD then you might find it to be too slow. But if you just want to check email, browse and watch Netflix or YouTube in standard definition it'll be fine. We are having an upgrade to Fibre later in 2018 and we'll post an update when its up and running. Can we start the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk from Greystones Bunkhouse? Some groups (though a minority) do start from Stainforth, you'll add an extra 6 miles to the walk as its 3 miles to Horton-in-Ribblesdale from Stainforth. Our regular groups do tend to start from Stainforth but charity walkers tend to prefer to drive up (or taxi) to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. If you are going to walk up to Horton-in-Ribblesdale I'd advise not walking up on the roadside as there isn't pavement on parts of the road and there can be a lot of lorries from the quarries, you can walk over the hills parallel to the road. Is there a kitchen? Our facilities only include a kettle and 20-litre fridge with freezer compartment and dining table, complimentary tea, coffee and milk are included. We don't have a kitchen as such and recommend the Knights Table Restaurant which serves a full English breakfast for £5.50 or the Craven Heifer which is round the corner. The Knights Table does offer a discount for Greystones Bunkhouse guests, its best to call in advance and book a table and confirm the discount amount over the phone when you reserve the table. I hope this was a useful post, if there's anything you'd like to know before you book do contact us. Complimentary late check out for online bookings.
We're offering a free late check out to guests who book online. Enjoy a relaxed departure until 2pm on your check out day. We looked at offering a special offer for bookings made in May for the 2018 season and felt that rather than the usual 15% off etc... a complimentary late check out would make a nice change. Enjoy lunch at the Craven Heifer or Knights Table, a walk around Stainforth Foss or a circular walk to Settle before heading back to the bunkhouse to collect your luggage before checking out. Of course, instead enjoy a relaxed lie in until lunchtime, perfect for the weary Three Peaks walker or real ale drinker! Book online and enjoy a relaxed departure with complimentary late check out included. Free late check out will be confirmed on your booking confirmation under the description 'FREE Late Check Out - 2pm". Please note, free late check out is until 2 pm instead of the standard check out time of 10am. Save on your next stay with us in the Three Day (Three Peaks) Sale!
Book online by 18th April 2018 and stay by the 28 May and save 15% on your booking. The deal is available for any number of nights including weekends but expires in three days time! With the Three Peaks Sale there is also the benefit of using our Book Now, Pay Later option. You won't need to pay for your booking until your stay when you book online and if plans change you can cancel for free up to 1 month before arrival. Two weekends are still available in May (11-12, 25-26) and the remaining weekends in April are also available to book online. The Craven Heifer's changed hands and welcome to the new landlords.
Our local pub has changed hands once again however things are looking up for 2018 with a new experienced couple managing the pub. Those who remember the previous landlords will remember the good food and what can only be described as a very, very Yorkshire welcome which didn't always go down too well with some visitors (see TripAdvisor 2017!). The pub is offering traditional fare with the popular Craven Burger on the menu and drinks can be enjoyed in the beer garden which overlooks the beck and the bridge. The pub is 50 yards from Greystones Bunkhouse and specializes in British cuisine and serves lunch and dinner (reservations required). The Craven Heifer is still tied to Thwaites brewery, good news for the regular ale drinker and offers the cask ales and Signature favourites. We advise calling ahead if you want to dine in the restaurant as the kitchen occasionally closes early in the winter months. As more of our guests book online, we've opened our booking service to accept American Express cards for online bookings.
As a small business we did not think that our guests would expect us to take American Express but we felt that after a couple of requests by guests who told us they preferred to use their American Express cards it was time to investigate, so we got in touch with them and set about making arrangements. After checking with our online booking service that the booking process would run smoothly with American Express cards we set about opening the option. Our first guest book and paid with their American Express card (a rewards card they told us) without any hitches and we're now happy to welcome any booking with an American Express card. There is still no fee to book any pay with American Express as has always been the case for a Mastercard or Visa card. To use your American Express card the process is no different to any other booking. Make sure to check availability and once you've found suitable dates, clicked through to book and typed in your contact information then add your card number starting with the number 34 or 37 and the 4 digits CID on the front of the card. The booking system will check the cards valid and you'll get the usual confirmation email from us straightaway to confirm your booking. |
